This is the first of a series of three volumes dedicated to digital synthesis and sound design. It is ideal for those who are newcomers to the field, but it will also prove to be an indispensable resource for those who wish to deepen existing skills in sound design, in electronic music, or in Max.

“This book is one of the first courses on electronic sound that explicitly integrates perception, theory, and practice using examples of real-time sound synthesis you can manipulate and experience for yourself. In my opinion, Cipriani and Giri have done a masterful job of allowing experiential and theoretical knowledge to reinforce each other. This book will work either as a textbook or as a vehicle for the independent learner. As a bonus, the book includes a thorough introduction to digital signal processing with Max and serves as a wonderful introduction to the programming concepts in that software. I hope you will take advantage of the excellent Max examples the authors have created. They are simultaneously fun and enlightening, and they sound good enough to use on stage. They are also worth examining as models for your own Max patches, or for extending in new ways. As you will see, the theoretical chapters are the “T” chapters, while practical and experiential knowledge is imparted by the “P” chapters. These chapters alternate, in the form of a ladder, refining the concepts at ever higher levels of sophistication. I want to wish you good luck on this new adventure, and also thank my two Italian friends for creating such a comprehensive resource for learning about digital music – the one I wish existed when I was a student!” (from the Foreword by David Zicarelli, publisher of Max).

    Great Great Course Book

    Hello,
First a word about my background:
I am a musician who became an engineer in computer science. As a musician and after teaching violin for some years, I followed a 2 years course in electronic music covering most of the topics of this book. I later also took 3 max msp trainings at IRCAM. Needless to say that I did most of the tutorials that come with max msp and some other ones found on the net.
    Now my opinion:
Well this book goes far beyond what I did in the past. I did not read all of it yet but I read until page 324 that is I read the basics and the chapters on additive synthesis. I am so glad to finally be able to do something worthwhile with additive synthesis! The explanations are clear and move forward quickly enough. You make progress with every short chapter. Just for what I read, the book is worth buying. There are some mistakes here and there but considering the scope, it is not abnormal. (For example: p119, I do not think it is possible to make the patch 01_completion.maxpat work without a snapshot object. But this object is introduced in the book only much later. Likewise Figure 2.35b page 308 is not what it is supposed to show…) It therefore depends who the book is intended for because that errors may be difficult steps for a lonely music student. That question came back in my mind because a student who needs to be told that he can transpose a midi melody by adding a number to the pitch parameter should probably not engage into following a curriculum like that…But the boundary is difficult to trace between being too simple and being too complicated. Overall the book may be read by a fairly large audience ranging from students up to the many people who pretend to teach or to use max msp. There are theoretical chapters and practical chapters. The exercises are interesting and can be used in practical situations. The ibook format allows to listen directly to examples from the book, to see videos in the book, to take notes, to review the notes, to navigate the notes and so on. Of course you need to have max msp installed on your computer. If you have a wide enough screen, you can read and do at the same time. This book is a glimpse into the future of teaching: a Great Great Course Book! I can’t wait to know it all and to buy and read the second volume.
