What was supposed to have been a 3-to-4 day operation, turned into a 74-day quagmire, and became one of the most misunderstood and bloodiest battles in Marine Corps history. The Marines of the 1st Division fought under the most difficult conditions possible, against an enemy entrenched into nearly inpregnable positions, with no plans of leaving the island alive. Fire and Rock is a novel detailing the exploits of E Company of the 1st Regiment's 2nd Battalion during 7 days of brutal fighting on Peleliu.
