Our world after the Catalyst is cold, gray, and deadly. All the monsters and magic of humanity's childhood leaks through cracks in the Mantle. Hunters handle the worst of it. Those who live in towns cling to their walls with solemn desperation, and those cursed or afflicted are driven out into the snow.
Jacob was one of the best, a cautious hunter who tracked vampires, shifters, and other horrors through the ice and the mist, and always came back alive. In his cabin, he lives out his retirement as quietly as he can, with the occasional visit from his daughter Abigail. A working mercenary, she sees her dad between jobs. Their reunions are tense, but kindly.
This quiet life is torn open when a girl shows up at Jacob's door, with an arrow in her back, and a mob on her trail. They call her a witch, a shape-shifter, a monster. Jacob's seen what a mob can do with fear and firearms, so he takes her in.
As food runs low, threats close in, old wounds reopen, Jacob has to decide who the true monsters are, and what he's willing to do to defend his home.
