Sir Walter Scott was a poet, novelist, critic and man of letters, who is recognized as the master of the historical novel.  His works were widely read and imitated across the whole of Europe, especially in 19th century, and he influenced on many writers, such as Elizabeth Gaskell, George Eliot and the Brontes.


“Guy Mannering” was published in 1815. The historical novel represents the story about Harry Bertram, who was kidnapped by smugglers when he was a child – little Harry witnessed the murder of customs official. The novel is dedicated to adventures of Harry, to the fate of his family in following years and also narrates about struggle over the inheritance of his family estate.
