Herland is a feminist utopian novel that imagines a secluded society inhabited entirely by women. The story is narrated by Vandyck Jennings, one of three male explorers—along with Terry Nicholson and Jeff Margrave—who discover the hidden land while on an expedition. In Herland, the women reproduce through parthenogenesis and have built a peaceful, cooperative civilization free from war, poverty, and crime.
The men are initially captured and studied by the women, whose society values reason, education, and collective responsibility. As the men learn more about Herland, their assumptions about gender, marriage, and power are challenged. Jeff idealizes the women, Terry reacts with hostility and entitlement, while Van gradually develops respect for their culture.
Eventually, the men form relationships with Herland women, but deep cultural differences emerge. Terry’s aggressive behavior leads to his exile, while Van and Jeff attempt to adapt to Herland’s egalitarian values.
Through satire and social critique, Gilman exposes the limitations of patriarchal norms and questions traditional ideas of femininity and masculinity. Herland ultimately presents a vision of a society organized around cooperation, motherhood, and mutual respect, offering a radical rethinking of gender roles and social progress.
