HIV infection by itself did not explain worsening mental performance (such as poor memory) in a study of US gay men. (1) Rather, this study linked changing mental function to heart problems and other conditions seen in any aging group. The researchers who performed this study don't think their findings rule out HIV as a risk factor for worsening mental function in everybody with HIV, partly because the gay men they studied probably differ from other groups of HIV-infected people in the United States and outside the country.
