A Photographic Essay

Description de l’éditeur

"A remarkable record. I've not seen such a collection of photographs all in once place." Annie Cheung.

"This brings back so many memories, but in a way that brings tears." Frankie Lo.

"So few people have both the eye to see and the ability to write what they observe." Dick Hughes.

In 2019 Hong Kong has been wracked by protests but in 1997, at the time when the then British Colony was handed over to China, there was a sense of great optimism.

Then protests were few. and instead there was a carnival atmosphere.

I had returned to the country that weekend and took a series of photographs that captured this historic moment mainly through the eyes of the ordinary man and woman on the street.

I also wrote an essay describing that weekend. This starts the book, with a second essay written about what is happening now concluding the book.

In between are over 100 photographs that have not been previously published.
