Through myriad examples and evidence to support his argument, from current events to the melting of our polar ice caps, Heartsong presents the reader with fact after fact. He uses humor to entertain the reader, but not as a mechanism to mock. Rather, humor is a catalyst to get the facts straight into our minds and hearts in a way that is easy to digest. The absurdities of today’s government, economy, and the fate of our environment are brought to light in such a way that effectively stirs change.


At the book’s close, the author presents a number of solutions for resolving the conflicts around the illusory, censored nature of our news sources, the acknowledgement and recognition of our human footprint on the planet, and the nature of our government administration. Kermit Heartsong's Illusions, Dystopia & Monsters uses style, humor and insight to explain the feedback loop of corruption, greed and pathology in the United States political-economic system.

The first part of the book details how corporations have taken control of our system, from the legal concept of corporate personhood promulgated by the judicial branch to the legalized bribery of elected officials who do their corporate benefactors' bidding, with a few salient and timely examples of the ramifications to our economic well-being and our freedoms provided.


The psychopathy of the leaders and how our system attracts and rewards psychopaths is also discussed in the first half of the book -- something that is rarely talked about in the typical analyses offered by either the right or the left.

Where the book really gets interesting, however, is when Heartsong defines the criteria necessary for a society to be classified as a dystopia and proceeds to discuss examples of such criteria as they have been illustrated in literature and cinema. Though the conclusion is dark, it is a compelling and original approach to the issue.

War and the military industrial complex get a detailed review as well with a large dose of black humor.

The last portion of the book explores some possible solutions to get us started on the road to recovery but felt a bit incomplete, which Heartsong acknowledged by stating he would have a more in-depth discussion of such in his upcoming book. I'll be interested to see what he comes up with.

And while it seems that America-is-going-to-hell-in-a-handbasket and there’s nothing we readers can do, Heartsong offers insightful solutions, providing hope.
