A child raised by Christian Science parents is left with a rich grandfather who has decided to dislike her, and proceeds to reorganise his household by declining to be unhappy. Clara Burnham was a composer's daughter and a trained musician who wrote some forty novels; this one sold enormously to readers who wanted the doctrine in a story rather than a lecture.
