Kardashev Shield

The greatest threat in human history. The most ambitious engineering project ever conceived. One woman who refuses to surrender.

What if the inevitable end of the world sparked the beginning of humanity's greatest achievement?

For thousands of years, Sirius has been the brightest star in Earth's night sky. A beacon for ancient civilizations, a guide for sailors, and a symbol of permanence.

Then Sirius moves.

When a rogue neutron star, known as Rama, destabilizes the Sirius system, scientists discover that a catastrophic stellar explosion will unleash a deadly wave of radiation toward Earth. Humanity has just over twenty years to prepare for an extinction-level event.

The world's greatest scientific minds reach a terrifying conclusion: There is no way to stop it.

Dr. Riley O'Connor disagrees.

An Irish-born physicist, visionary entrepreneur, and pioneer of revolutionary gravity technology, Riley has already accomplished things the world once considered impossible. Now she proposes something so audacious that even her closest colleagues question her sanity.

Build a gravitational shield capable of protecting civilization from the fury of an exploding star. As impossible as the task becomes, Riley discovers that the laws of physics may prove easier to overcome than the divisions of humanity.

As the countdown begins, Riley must confront fierce scientific opposition, political interference, devastating failures, and heartbreaking personal losses. Along the way, an extraordinary cast of scientists, engineers, soldiers, and dreamers must learn to set aside their differences and unite behind a single purpose.

And somewhere between the mathematics of survival and the sacrifices required to achieve it, Riley discovers that love, friendship, and the stubborn refusal to surrender may be humanity's most powerful forces.

Kardashev Shield is more than a science fiction thriller. It is a story about what humanity can become.

Grounded in real scientific concepts and filled with unforgettable characters, breathtaking engineering, political intrigue, and an inspiring vision of the future, Kardashev Shield explores the possibility that our greatest challenges may ultimately unlock our greatest potential.

Originally conceived for the XPRIZE, this ambitious novel by Michael Gorton and Aaron Handwerker asks a question that reaches far beyond fiction:

What could nine billion people accomplish if they united to do the impossible?

The universe did not become less dangerous.

Humanity became more capable.
