Description de l’éditeur
Freedom denied and democracy deferred ignited the passion of L. Venchael Booth to summon "freedom-loving" (1) Baptists fed up with the "loss [of] freedom to worship, participate, and grow in the kingdom work" (2) and to found the Progressive National Baptist Convention (PNBC) in Cincinnati, Ohio, at the Zion Baptist Church in November 1961. This crusader's stride toward freedom for black Baptists did not have s his guiding star the Civil Rights Movement, as some have argued. (3) Rather, the inextinguishable yearning that led to his passion was his desire to build a convention honoring tenure that would elect officers of the people, by the people, and for the people; to implement procedures for auditing the convention's records; to eliminate the "imperial majesty" surrounding the presidency; and to make straight the way for a "Christ-centered" and "Cause-centered" organization after years of internal struggles for and bitter defeats over tenure that roused his soul.
