Lad

A collie on a New Jersey estate: the fights, the burglary, the show he hates, the mistress he guards, and the day the master's hands are needed. Terhune wrote about his own dog at Sunnybank and made him the most famous collie in America before Lassie. The anthropomorphism is heavy and the dog behaviour underneath it is observed exactly. Thirty-eight paintings from 1842 to 1903, among them Winslow Homer and Eastman Johnson, gather the homes, woods and shorelines a collie would know.
