Publisher Description

The Cold War was a Victorian tea party compared to this. On so many fronts we now stand at the brink of clear-cut victory or calamitous defeat. Can we crack our energy and environmental problems before it's too late? Has the time finally arrived for new political, economic, and moral paradigms? Will our knowledge of the human genome allow us to undermine disease or program the course of our own evolution? Can we--should we--resurrect or perhaps even create life? To genuinely and discriminatingly informed persons, everything now seems possible. And in this era of profound responsibilities, we owe it to one another to stay informed. Newspapers, magazines, and journals are terrific, as far as they go. But good books are and will always be the preeminent repositories of fully ripened ideas and arguments. Absent books, I would argue, literacy is a fraud.
