Elizabeth Gaskell was an English author, one of the most beloved and critically acclaimed novelists of Victorian literature, whose works offer a detailed portrait of the lives of many strata of contemporary society. Her literary legacy includes six novels, several short stories and non-fictional pieces, as well as the first biography of Charlotte Bronte. 

“Mary Barton” is the Elizabeth Gaskell's first novel, published in 1848. Based on the actual murder, the story is set in the English city of Manchester between 1839 and 1842 and narrates about Mary Barton, who is the daughter of a man implicated in the murder.
