Mucedorus

Royal praise gives way to a sly contest between Comedy and Envy, and this lively court romance immediately sets delight against danger. At the heart of the action are Mucedorus, prince of Valencia, and Amadine, princess of Aragon, whose love must survive disguises, forest perils, jealous rivals, and the volatile swings of fortune. Mucedorus leaves Valencia to seek Amadine in Aragon, first as a shepherd and later as a hermit, while the comic servant Mouse mangles every instruction with absurd confidence. In the woods, Mouse flees a bear, Segasto abandons Amadine, and Mucedorus wins her gratitude by killing the beast. Back at court, his honor is challenged by Segasto's envy and by a murder accusation after Mucedorus kills Tremelio in self-defense, but Amadine's testimony earns him pardon and favor. Yet love and rank remain divided: Segasto is banished, the king grieves and then rejoices at news of his son, and Mucedorus and Amadine share a secret farewell. Their reunion is threatened when the savage Bremo seizes Amadine, turning this pastoral comedy toward violence, rescue, and romantic suspense.
