When the money arrives, everything falls apart.

Peter Cernosek is doing everything right. He holds down a paying job, runs a small side business with his wife Jane, and sets aside a little money each month even as prices keep climbing. Then the government announces an unscheduled UBI deposit of $$324,900. Peter knows what that means.

Hyperinflation hollows out every paycheck. Anti-hoarding laws criminalize common sense. The rich arrive in armored limousines while ordinary people wait in line behind police drones. By nightfall, the shelves will be empty and the streets will be on fire.

Peter has one hour before prices double. One backpack. One plan to buy enough to resell later and finally get ahead. But as he loses everything he has been fighting to protect, Peter is finally forced to ask whether the life he has been clinging to was ever worth saving.

At its heart, "Payday" is about the cruel gap between the promise of security and the reality of dependence, asking whether a life sustained by the government can ever truly be a life owned by the people living it. Peter's journey is one of a man who finally stops trying to survive inside a broken system and chooses, at great cost, to build something real outside of it.
