Newton Booth Tarkington was a famous American novelist and dramatist best known for his novels The Magnificent Ambersons and Alice Adams. He is, with William Faulkner and John Updike, one of only three novelists to win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction more than once.

Penrod and Sam is a notable novel by Newton Booth Tarkington. It was first published in 1916. The subject of this story is the relationship between the main characters, Penrod Schofield, and his best friend, Sam Williams. Penrod and Sam focuses on a year in the life of adventurous young boys! This collection of short stories is considered to be a noteworthy classic and a prime example of literature in the early 19th century.
