Proctor's Ghosts Proctor's Ghosts

Proctor's Ghosts

Description de l’éditeur

This dramatic play centers around Henry Proctor, the disgraced British General blamed for his retreat and ultimate defeat by an advancing American army in which the great Shanee Leader, Tecumseh, was killed in 1813. The play opens 9 years later in Bath, England where the ailing man lives with his wife, Elizabeth. It is October 13th, ten years to the day since the death of the heroic General Sir Isaac Brock, who died defending the heights at Queenston.
Henry Proctor is struggling to write a memoir, to set the record straight on his court martial and actions that were deemed cowardly. But words do not come easily due to the laudanum to which he is addicted. Waking in a delirium, he is visited by apparitions of General Brock, General Prevost and, lastly, Tecumseh. Throughout, he is comforted and counseled by Elizabeth and through dialogue with her his true character is revealed

This play tells the story of what actually happened at the battle of Moraviantown as the British and Indians halted their retreat and dug in to stop the advancing Americans. It also examines the intrigue that followed that resulted in the court martial of General Proctor and the roles played by British commanders and officials. With the help of his ghostly apparitions that visit him in the night, Proctor is able to complete his memoir which he hopes will exonerate him. In the last scene, he is escorted by Tecumseh to transition to the afterlife.
