Robert Orange is a gifted Catholic politician whose convictions repeatedly collide with ambition, love, friendship, and the expectations of the society around him. His story unfolds among London drawing rooms and political clubs, continental journeys, diplomatic households, theatrical performances, religious controversy, and the elaborate codes of honour and reputation that governed nineteenth-century public life.
