Roses in Red Wax is the first book in the Darnalay Castle Series, although all of the books in the series can be read as standalones. For fans of Bree Wolf, Lily Baldwin and Julia Brannan, this novel is the perfect mixture of realistic history and heart-wrenching romance. It contains strong language and several spicy open-door scenes.

When I first began to read this book, I was. It in the right mood.
And there were so many dithyrambic reviews about this debut novel I could not fail it.
So I decided to pause my reading to pick up at a later time, then life went on. With the release date dangerously approaching. So it became the book I brought with me during the winter holidays with my family.
And while during holidays I read much slower than usually, I finally saw what earlier readers pinpointed before me.
The setting is not often seen, as while London’s slums are commonly used as background, Scotland’s cities are not typically shown as seats of unrest or riots during these times.
Jane and her brother Cameron are the lucky ones in their misery, they have few but he is able to provide enough for them both when around them people starve and/or become victims of the mills/area’s harsh laws.
Still since they lost everything, she is a shadow of her former self. And Percy awakens something she in her core refuses to feel, a spark of life she believes she does not deserve.
Percy has lived a live free of constraints, enjoying the ripe fruit of his father’s wealth until he has to face the source of his family’s fortune, on the back and health of many workers deprived of hopes and dreams.
When they meet, sparks fly immediately but Percy is still the young man with few grasps of how hard life can be, only frustrated by his thwarted plan for more holidays in a Sunny place with no other expectations than which pleasure places he will enjoy with his friends. While Jane is still mourning her ancient existence and the love she has lost, why she has built a fortress around herself, determined to grieve her whole life what will never be.
The first part was a bit slow but helped to introduce the main couple with their past and flaws. Percy is no alpha hero, he is a dreamer, so at time lost when confronted with the harsh reality of his father’s source of profits. Jane is on her side determined to bath in her guilt of being the survivor, so when Percy offers her a way out of her actual circumstances, past experience reminds her everything comes with a tag.
This a tale of lust at first sight, love coming only later when they get to know the other, to learn about their dreams and their wounds.
A lovely moving tale of a man who will have to change to accept who he is and where he wants to go with the woman who lightens his days.
