Description de l’éditeur
The death of a friend leads the cautious Eleanor Spencer to reevaluate her life. In a rare impulse, she kisses the man of her dreams—her best friend’s older brother. The moment of madness gives her courage to take more chances. This spring, she will finally travel to London for the social season. All she needs is to compile a list of adventures to complete. At the top of her list? Kiss Lucius Grisham again…
Barely surviving since his father severed his funds, Lucius Grisham works two respectable jobs, and one decidedly disreputable job, just to keep up critical appearances. When Ellie becomes the target of a sordid bet made by his rakehell friends, Lucius must step in to protect his sister’s friend. As he finds himself pulled into helping Ellie with her list of adventures, he is surprised to find his jaded heart tempted by the innocent beauty. But Ellie Spencer is far too good for a scoundrel like him.
Ellie will endanger both her heart and her virtue to make Lucius hers. Can Lucius become the man Ellie believes him to be?

Will he understand in time, he is his worst enemy…
This is my first read by the author, and stepping in a new author’s world is a bit like traveling to a new place.
Being the second in a series, I do not know how the characters were introduced in the previous book. And while I had some doubts at first about Eleanor, I loved instantly Lucius, he is far from perfect, well to not say much flawed. Too proud but determined to depend on no one. As a second son, he might in appearance lives the idle life of a peer, when he works for his living, not afraid to « dirty » himself if necessary.
But at the same time, it does not help to restore his view of himself, he still believes himself of being undeserving, unable to make the right choices as many times his pride stood between him and possible help.
Ellie finally grew quickly in me, as while I did not know what to think about this living-enclosed-in-her-four-walls-small-world young woman, unable to express her thoughts or opinion to others, she is a different woman with her friends, and Lucius is part of them.
I loved their bickering and how each knows so well the other, they makes fun about this and are also able to understand one another.
Ellie accepts Lucius as he is, with his mistakes and errors, it is more he who struggles to accept her feelings, to share her faith in him.
I loved they do not deny their feelings, nor fight them as friends turned lovers, they have enough to overcome due to their own circumstances to not add more to their burden.
One thing is sure, I want to read more from this author as there are many more characters in need of their own story.
4.5 stars
I just thought Ellie had much freedom for a young unmarried Miss, even if she is no peer’s daughter.
I also wonder, when a woman refused a dance once at a party, dictates did not forbid her to dance with anyone else?

I have been granted an advance copy by the author, here is my true and unbiased opinion.
