Scaramouche

Andre-Louis Moreau was born with a gift of laughter and the conviction that the world was mad. At breakfast in sleepy Gavrillac, news arrives to prove him right: a gamekeeper has shot a peasant for taking a pheasant.

In Brittany, as political storms gather over France, Andre-Louis is a young lawyer with a sharp tongue and little faith in human nature. His idealistic friend Philippe wants justice for the dead peasant’s widow and children, and asks Andre-Louis to help appeal to his godfather, the Lord of Gavrillac. But the accused gamekeeper acted on the orders of a powerful marquis, and Andre-Louis knows how little the law may do for the poor. Can his wit—and Philippe’s conviction—make the powerful answer for their cruelty?
