Squire Phin

In the sleepy Maine village of Palermo, old men gossip in the shade while every stranger is measured against local wisdom, and no one is watched more closely than Aquarius "Hard-times" Wharff. To outsiders he seems a solemn eccentric, but to his neighbors he is a trusted weather-sense man whose strange poses, crow warnings, and "weather-vane spells" may point to hard times ahead. Around Brickett's store, the townsmen argue over whether his gifts are folly, instinct, or something akin to magic, with rumors of family powers, second sight, and the legendary Rudd Goff lending the talk a comic, folkloric charge. When Squire Phin Look is drawn into the debate, the story widens into a mock-legal, warmly satiric portrait of small-town judgment, superstition, and practical wit. Then a dusty elephant and circus wagon train shatter the village calm, setting off a chain of domestic outrage, reckless schemes, and escalating farce. As Hiram barrels off in a circus van, Avery's spiteful test of Imogene's loyalty nearly unleashes disaster, until only music may calm the rampaging beast. Humorous, vivid, and full of local color, the novel turns small-town life into a stage for hidden gifts, human folly, and sudden chaos.
