Description de l’éditeur
James Edward Preston Muddock was born on the 28th May 1843 in Southampton, Hampshire, England.
Muddock worked extensively as a foreign correspondent, traveling across India, China, and Australia. This worldly experience heavily influenced his prolific literary output, across ghost stories, historical fiction, and guide books.
His best-known name character was Dick Donovan, the Glaswegian detective and a brilliant master of disguise. This character proved so popular that Muddock adopted the character’s name as his official crime-fiction pseudonym.
Donovan published nearly 300 detective and mystery stories between 1889 and 1922. During the late Victorian era, his grit-driven detective series appeared frequently in the Strand Magazine alongside Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes. For a brief period, Donovan's popularity actually surpassed Holmes.
Muddock's writing predated and helped shape the modern ‘tough guy’ investigator archetype before its later ‘hard-boiled’ incarnation.
Dick Donovan died on the 23rd January 1934 in Upper Tooting, Surrey, England. He was 90.
