The Ambassadors

An elderly idealist Lambert Strether comes to Europe to persuade a capricious son of a wealthy widow Mrs Newsome, who has a love affair with a wicked woman in Paris, to return home and engage in the family business.



Strether does not like to nose into other people's affairs, but he has personal motives to complete this task successfully – he hopes to marry Mrs Newsome on his return to the USA.
