The Downtown East Side

The Downtown East Side is a photo ebook by Claire Martin, Australian rising star of world photography. It features art photographs taken in the Downtown East Side, infamous urban area in Vancouver, Canada. Through a series of raw portraits, she denounces the lack of interest of modern societies towards slums communities left to their fate, drugs, prostitution and AIDS. Far from sordid realism, Claire captures snapshots of real life and emphasises on glimpses of humanity of these ‘Wretched of modern times’.

Claire Martin's work from this series has been exhibited at the Australian Centre for Photography, the Deichtorhallen House of Photography Hamburg Germany, and the Association of Photographers Gallery, London, as well as featuring in the core program for many international photo festivals. Publications include Vanity Fair UK, The Wall Street Journal, Fader Magazine, The Australian Financial Review and The British Journal of Photography.

The Downtown East Side est un album de photos d´art d´une étoile montante de la photographie mondiale. A travers les portraits sans fard des habitants d´un quartier déshérité de Vancouver, Claire Martin décrit et dénonce l´abandon à la drogue et au sida d´une population marginalisée. Loin du misérabilisme, ces photographies captent sur le vif des personnages pittoresques et des restes d´humanité.

Les photos de cette série ont été exposées au Centre Australien pour la Photographie à Sydney, à la Deichtorhallen Maison de la Photographie à Hambourg et à la galerie de l´Association des Photographes de Londres. Elles figurent en bonne place dans de nombreux festivals de photo. Elles ont été publiées notamment par Vanity Fair (Grande Bretagne), le Wall Street Journal, le magazine Fader, l´Australian Financial Review et le British Journal of Photography.
