Publisher Description

Judy Ray spent ten months in India with her husband, David Ray, who had received an Indo-U.S. Fellowship, and two teenage daughters. Their home base was in the desert state of Rajasthan, but they also traveled to the southern tip of the country, the foothills of the Himalayas, and the region of Kashmir. Her book recounts day-to-day encounters on the streets, visits in hospitable homes, classes in the classical kathak dance, exploring religious and historical sites, and cultural adjustments along the way.

Judy Ray grew up in England, lived in Uganda in the 1960s and has travelled in many other parts of the world. She moved to the United States with her husband. While they lived in Kansas City she was associate editor of New Letters magazine and then the first director of The Writers Place. Two of her other books are To Fly Without Wings (poems) and From Place to Place (personal essays).
