TIn 1961, a college graduate from a coal town in central Pennsylvania walked into a Washington, D.C. accounting firm as a junior accountant, CPA exam still ahead of him. Forty years later, he had helped build a company from nothing to nearly a billion dollars in annual revenue, and sold it to UnitedHealth Group.

The Journey is Jess Sweely's account of that arc: a childhood shaped by a working-class railroad family in Clearfield, Pennsylvania, a stint in the Virginia National Guard, a CPA license earned in 1964, and senior finance roles at Fairchild-Hiller, General Dynamics, and Kaman Aerospace - three of the country's major aerospace and defense contractors, where he rose to Controller. In 1988, walking away from a company mired in a federal investigation he had no part in, Sweely helped build AmeriChoice from the ground up, a Medicaid managed care company that grew to serve members across five states before UnitedHealth acquired it in 2002.

This isn't a polished success story with the hard parts smoothed out. It includes surviving that investigation as an innocent bystander, a family winery built and then lost in the recession that followed the 2008 financial crisis, a Hodgkin's Lymphoma diagnosis and recovery, and open-heart surgery, alongside sixty years of marriage, a scholarship foundation for his hometown, and a horse farm built from raw land.

For readers of business memoirs, career-risk narratives, and stories of executives who built something real from an ordinary start, The Journey is a specific, unvarnished account of what six decades in American business actually looked like from the inside.
