The Mayflower Compact

On a November day at Cape Cod, a company of Englishmen makes a startling promise: they will bind themselves together—and obey laws they have yet to write.

Written aboard the Mayflower in 1620, this compact begins with loyalty to King James and a voyage meant for Virginia. But the ship has reached Cape Cod instead, and the passengers face a question more urgent than where to settle: who will have authority when they come ashore? Their answer is a covenant to form a civil government, make laws for the common good, and submit to them. Can a promise signed among strangers hold a colony together?
