'The Monk'' is a traditional gothic novel that portrays the life of Ambroiso and his grievous fall into sin. From parricide to incestuous relations, the novel depicts the turmoil in his life. It reflects how evil tempts and lures men and the subsequent disaster that follows. To some it also depicts the horrors that went beyond the walls of monasteries of Roman Catholics.
