It’s been three years since Jame’s father, Viscount Winston Lynton, died mysteriously in a carriage accident in Vienna, his fob watch and signet ring missing from his body. When Caleb and Sir William recover the watch, returning it to Lady Emily, questions arise surrounding the accident, especially when Lord Marcus Stone, a fellow antiquities collector, unexpectedly comes to Surrey asking questions about the watch.

Meanwhile, James and Susan have finally been given permission to marry, but when tragedy strikes Lady Emily, Susan’s stubborn vigil by her bedside creates more discord between the couple.
