The Kerry mountains at the end of the eighteenth century, an old Catholic family with nothing left but the land, and a rising that is coming whether they join it or not. Lever wrote about the Irish gentry going under with more sympathy here than in almost anything else he did. This edition adds 38 bound plates after paintings by Marianne North, Thomas Hill, Thomas Sidney Cooper and others, alongside 22 in-text illustrations restored and coloured for this printing.
