Ida B. Wells-Barnett was an early figure in the civil rights movement. She was born into slavery, and gained her freedom when the Emancipation Proclamation was declared. She suffered through various hardships, and became a journalist investigating the horrors of lynching, proving that it wasn't a tool of justice, but a tool of terror and oppression.
