Tomorrow Is a Long Time: Tijuana’s unchecked HIV/AIDS epidemic is a collaboration between photographer Malcolm Linton and writer Jon Cohen that explores the chasm between aspiration and reality in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
Recent advances in treatment and prevention have led everyone from public health officials to world leaders to declare that the tools now exist to end AIDS, especially in places that have epidemics concentrated in “high-risk” groups. Tijuana, on Mexico’s border with the United States, is one such place. For 18 months, Linton and Cohen documented the lives of men and women there who were either routinely exposed to the virus or living with it—people who injected drugs, gay men, transgender women, and sex workers. The book’s haunting images and stories offer nuanced, humane portraits of individuals—including many deportees from the United States—who often receive scant attention for both their medical and social needs. Tomorrow Is a Long Time shows that the end of the HIV/AIDS epidemic is nowhere in sight for Tijuana and many other places in the world with similarly fractured responses to the disease.
