A first novel in a series set in the Wisconsin Uplands. Youngsters just out of High School are being deployed to Iraq, family farms are disappearing and town leaders are looking for one big economic development idea that will raise them out of poverty. Sheriff's Deputy, Matt Swedberg finds a dog wandering along the road and it begins eating rocks necessitating a visit to Carol Sparks' vet clinic. A suitcase filled with religious tracts crashes though the roof of Melvin Kopp's trailer after which the Schwann's route man moves in with evalngelist Midge Duffy. Vandalism rears its ugly head deep in the woods. And Pastor Thom White's birding group makes a grisly discovery while seeking out the elusive piliated woodpecker in Mackades Park. Things come to a head at the July 4th celebration in Mt. Hope where several unexpected turns creates unsettling twists.
