Samuel Mathers is a man under pressure, and he is losing control of his life's work.

Mathers is the head of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn in Paris. Over the last few years, he has received letters from Charles Bentwith in London. Those letters tell stories of how Bentwith and William Westcott experienced the terror of devils and golems back in 1889.

But Mathers has been unable to give his own members what they want: a summoning. Oblivious to the dangers, they thirst for whatever is beyond the veil, be it a spirit or something more dangerous.

But an introduction to a young charismatic practitioner named Aleister Crowley might just change all that. Can Mathers and Crowley work together to give the Order what it wants? Or will their individual ambitions undermine the chance of what could be the greatest of arcane alliances?
