What is Love‪?‬

Love and romance as we know it today is a relatively new concept.  Through most of the 19th century and before, men and women married for practical reasons.  Money and procreativity were the primary reasons for getting married, and love had little to do with it.  Women looked for the best providers, and men looked for the most child-bearing wives and housekeepers.  Everyone knew what was expected, so there was usually little resentment.  If a couple didn’t get along, they at least pretended to do so.  The idea of choosing and nurturing true love was almost unknown prior to recent times.
