When the Holy Ghost Is Come

The disciples have left their boats and daily work for Jesus—now, in the upper room, He tells them He is going away. Who can take the place of the one on whom they depend for everything?

Writing in the early twentieth century from within the world of The Salvation Army, Samuel Logan Brengle returns to Jesus’ promise of “another Comforter.” He asks readers to see the Holy Spirit not as an impersonal force, but as a divine Helper who teaches, guides, strengthens, and leads believers into service. The disciples’ fear of being left helpless becomes the opening to Brengle’s larger question: what does it mean to have this Helper not merely beside you, but within you?
