“That was my first tooth,” the young dentist tells his patient. Her reply is less gratitude than alarm: has he really been practising on her?

On a fine August morning in 1896, at an English seaside resort, Valentine is trying to establish a dental practice—and has just won his first private patient. Dolly Clandon and her twin brother, Philip, are new to England, briskly curious about their dentist and quick to invite him to lunch. But when Valentine recognizes their family name, Dolly cries out that the secret is out. Their mother has brought them home after eighteen years abroad, and the children know little of the family story that seems to follow them. With a novice dentist, fearless twins and a past no one wants to explain, what could possibly go smoothly?
