Audie Award Nominee, Science Fiction, 2013
Padlocked doors. Strange light fixtures. Mutant cockroaches.
There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s. Because every room in this old Los Angeles brownstone has a mystery or two. Mysteries that stretch back over a hundred years. Some of them are in plain sight. Some are behind locked doors. And all together these mysteries could mean the end of Nate and his friends. Or the end of everything....

An enjoyable dive into a mixed genre
Disclaimers, I’m 50 (soon to be 51), I have ALD and I mainly enjoy Science Fiction and Horror, so my starting measure is always something like Hellraiser and 2001 Space Oddesy. The first part of the book built up a good pace, I enjoyed being lead into the characters and their emotions, the twists and turns. As the writing builds towards the middle of the story it starts to stretch things out, I found this to be harder to engage with as the fantasy elements kicked in. The final part of the book felt rushed as we had spent quite a few hours of intricate explanation and plot twists, but the ending felt like the author was tired, I don’t know, it felt like there could be more or something with more substance, ‘and they went about their normal lives’ left me feeling robbed a little. It’s worth a dive into and certainly beats the Zombie plague of stories cluttering up bandwidth, it was about spot on for recommendations in my case.
Amazing book, hate that it ended!
This is one of those books you can't put down - or switch off in terms of the audio version! The narrator is brilliant, really brought it to life, and the plot so new I hated that the book finished! Love love love this book, can't reccomend it enough! It's really something different!
Thoroughly great book! Sad I've finished it.
I was hoping this would be the kind of book I could listen to while commuting and then spend the day looking forward to hearing more, and I'm happy to say that's exactly what I got. It hooked me from the start, the mundane story of Nate moving to a new place and meeting the interesting neighbours was intriguing and the hints of mystery gave me faith in this being an excellent read. I really really enjoyed it and Its the most enjoyable book I've listened to this year. Highly recommend to anyone who enjoys mysterious, adventure type books. It had a little of everything and kept the pace while also not losing you in the story. Great book!
