Publisher Description
It is 1905. Asta and her husband, Rasmus, have come to East London from Denmark with their two little boys. With Rasmus constantly away on business, Asta keeps loneliness and isolation at bay by writing a diary. These diaries, published over 70 years later, reveal themselves to be more than a mere journal. For they seem to hold the key to an unsolved murder and to the mystery of a missing child. It falls to Asta's granddaughter, Ann, to unearth the buried secrets of nearly a century before.

Thoroughly absorbing
This audio book was pure listening joy. From the elegance of Vine's writing to the excellence of Walter's narration. The story, set in Victorian London, is one woman's story of life in a strange country, left largely to fend for herself, raising her children and coming to terms with the customs and cultures around her. The thread of something mysterious is woven into the story skilfully and through Asta's diaries we discover more than the Victorian police force uncover. Harriett Walter is one of the most superb narrators of audio books I have had the pleasure to listen to. Her accent and expression bring Asta's character to life with such authenticity and she reads softly and gently which suits the writing style of Vine so well. I happily recommend this book and have gone on to listen to several others by both author and narrator.
Dire
Dreadful, waste of money...
The narator's voice is a sort of sing song Norweigan english and cannot be borne!! I personally couldn't listen to the whole recording - and I would consider myself to be persistent!
As for the plot... boring boring boring...
(as much as I could bear listening to...)
