"I remember the dirt: winter-parched and hard, the angst of chalk smeared into canvas-board by an artist shrieking visions...." So begins Bernadette, a poetic rhapsody that is both memoir and, as hinted in the final poem, "Excerpts from a Pessimist's Alphabet", a "reverdie" of figments bound between the covers of a book that smells of years stashed on a shelf unopened, stewing in its unshed dreams.
