The long-awaited fourth audiobook in the New York Times bestselling Old Kingdom series by Garth Nix.
Award-winning author Garth Nix returns to the Old Kingdom with a thrilling prequel complete with dark magic, royalty, dangerous action, a strong heroine, and flawless world-building. This epic fantasy adventure is destined to be a classic, and is perfect for fans of Game of Thrones.
Clariel is the daughter of one of the most notable families in the Old Kingdom, with blood relations to the Abhorsen and, most important, to the King. She dreams of living a simple life but discovers this is hard to achieve when a dangerous Free Magic creature is loose in the city, her parents want to marry her off to a killer, and there is a plot brewing against the old and withdrawn King Orrikan. When Clariel is drawn into the efforts to find and capture the creature, she finds hidden sorcery within herself, yet it is magic that carries great dangers. Can she rise above the temptation of power, escape the unwanted marriage, and save the King?
Give Clariel a chance
If you have enjoyed Sabriel, Liriel and Abhorsen, don’t let the review by Jamie Goodwin put you off. Although my sentimental side would have preferred a different ending, it is still an enjoyable book to read and listen to. It will be best, though, to read / listen to the books in order they were published. I don’t think it would be ideal to read / hear Clairel before the others.
A little disappointing
My girlfriend and I have listened to the audiobooks of each of the Old Kingdom series. We were absolutely hooked on Sabriel, Lirael and Abhorsen (I’d read the books already so we got the audiobooks for long car journeys).
We weren’t as impressed with Clariel though. It felt as if the book was cut short - like it was building up to a long, rich story that ended quite abruptly. Very little happened that really engaged us and the plot was quite obvious, very in-your-face.
Garth is working on a sequel to Abhorsen though. Hopefully it’ll be much better :-)
