A bit meh
If you’ve followed the series this far it’s probably because you like a) how dark La Plante is willing to push the narratives, b) the clever twists and turns and c) the heat between Travis and Lancton. This book is an odd one in the series because it basically lacks all 3 of these features that La Plante has become known for. As far as point a) is concerned, there isn’t anything remotely shocking or thrilling here. B) The plot is clever but not THAT clever. There are some leaps that Travis makes that don’t actually make any sense (why is she so fixated with the painting of the boat?) In previous books, Anna has spotted things or followed up on things for a reason, whereas in this book, she fixates on things and wastes time and resources with no good reason and the fact she just happens to be right is extremely contrived. C) there’s no romance and no tension. Anna seems to have become a dislikable pen pusher with random bouts of uncharacteristic immaturity and arrogance. La Plante might be trying to do something here, but if she was, it was completely lost on me. If you’re following the series, feel free to skip this book and read a synopsis/summary.

Anna and Lancton are still separated but destined to get back together.
Anna has worked on a case with Lancton where the bad guy got away.
