Publisher Description

'Ross Greenwood doesn’t write clichés. What he has written here is a fast-paced, action-filled puzzle with believable characters that's spiced with a lot of humour' Kath Middleton A brutal double murder on a Norfolk beach horrifies the town of Cromer. The way the victims died is chilling and so Norfolk’s Major Investigation Team task DS Ashley Knight to manage the case.

It soon becomes clear that the murders were carefully planned and the finger of suspicion points to an organised crime gang, but as the evidence mounts, a far more sinister theory emerges.

Ashley has been allocated a young but opinionated partner in Hector Fade, and sparks soon fly. Annoyingly for Ashley, Hector is no pushover and looks destined for great things. When the pair delve into the case, they struggle to understand who would inflict such suffering on their victims and hope the crime is a one off from a deranged and dangerous individual. But then another body is found.

There’s a killer on the loose who must be caught, or other victims will meet their fate by the sea.

Bestselling Ross Greenwood is back with the start of an exciting new series, perfect for fans of Mark Billingham, Ian Rankin and Peter James.

Average

It’s not bad, but I like DCI Ryan and DCI Logan better. I might continue the series at some point, as there is nothing really wrong with it, but the narrator has a very annoying voice ☹️

Confusing and terrible narrator

Didn’t like this book, too many characters to keep track of and poorly read

Ross Greenwood can write, but …

This detective novel has pulled me in different directions.
It is melodramatic with many intense, sometimes brutal and vivid descriptions of violence, and often I felt written with gratuitous relish. Clearly, Greenwood does not believe that less is more; nor does he have any confidence in the reader’s own imagination.
What also makes this novel a hard read, or a hard listen, is that the main character despite her sentimental back story, one so obviously used to pull emotional strings, is a flattish self-absorbed character lacking in natural empathy or insight. Indeed, she’s a puppet, the author pulls the strings, so she lacks credibility and is hard to like. And if the backdrop reflects contemporary English culture in a little seaside town it gives one pause to wonder.
And yet the author also has a deep understanding of and compassion for people who are emotionally disturbed and his best portrayal (if one forgives the melodrama) is of Eddie.
In the end, I just couldn’t be bothered to read the last few chapters; the plot and the characters lacked the conviction to carry me through or to care who lived, who died and who got locked up!
