Publisher Description
Pell's Station, orbiting the alien world simply called Downbelow, had always managed to remain neutral in the ever escalating conflict between The Company, whose fleets from Earth had colonized space, and its increasingly independent and rebellious colony worlds. But Pell's location - - on the outer edge of Earth's defensive perimeter - makes her the focal point in the titanic battle of colony worlds fighting for independence.
Customer Reviews
Absolutely brilliant.
Downbelow Station is a classic, powerful, SF story of conflict and politics. Humanity has spread from Earth, and the people of the Beyond have split to govern themselves. Earth Company built a fleet to bring them in line, but then lost interest. The Beyonders, in the form of the new stellar state 'Union' are in the ascendancy, and the focus of the story is the world and star station of Pell. Will it remain neutral, Company or Union, or worse?
This audio book is well done, with the narrator using a variety of voices to represent the characters believably and well. I've read the novel many times, but found things in this that I missed when reading rather than listening. A good example is the timeline, which becomes so much more apparent than as a chapter heading, tying the story together more firmly. I recommend it wholeheartedly.
