‘Complex. Inventive. Twisting. Unsettling’ – Sarah Vaughan, bestselling author of Anatomy of a Scandal
The Place: Seawings, a beautiful art deco home overlooking the sweep of the bay in Midtown-on-Sea.
The Crime: The gilded Holden family – Piper and Gray and their two teenage children, Riva and Artie – have vanished from the house without a trace.
The Detective: DS Saul Anguish, brilliant but with a dark past, treads the narrow line between light and shade.
One late autumn morning, Piper’s best friend arrives at Seawings to discover an eerie scene – the radio is playing, phones are charging on the worktop, the cars are in the garage. But the house is deserted.
In fifteen-year-old Riva Holden’s bedroom, scrawled across the mirror in blood, are three words:
Make
Them
Stop.
What happens next?

*The Darkness*
This book had an eerie feel throughout, drawing us into the atmosphere and life of Piper Holden and her best friend Julianne.
We begin with Julianne arriving at Piper’s home for their usual run, only to find the house empty and signs of an incident. The lady who cleans arrives at the same time, and the police are called, setting the stage for a hunt.
We are also taken backwards in time to the events leading up to the disappearance of the Holden family. We learn more about both Julianne and Piper, their friendship, and the secrets they keep from their families. One of them carries a much darker past.
Piper is a very controlled and calculated person, while Julianne seems to be in awe of her and almost needy.
We also meet Detective Saul Anguish, a new member of the major crimes squad with a dark past. He is a collector and has a keen sense of untruths. I would have liked to have learned more about him.
The story alternates between the present and the past, and I disliked most of the characters. However, I would have enjoyed learning more about Saul.
As the story progresses, it becomes darker, revealing that one person can only rely on themselves who takes steps to achieve that.
Overall, it was a dark psychological thriller but, the only drawback for me was that I wanted to know more about Detective Saul Anguish’s character.
