APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
Plenty of stores seek to capture the intricacies and sacrifices of motherhood. Sarah Vaughan—who had us utterly engrossed with 2018’s Anatomy of a Scandal—does a superb job translating this most diverse of roles. Our two leads are Jess and Liz. Jess is the sort of parent that inspires acute jealousy in others (including Liz). She’s deeply committed to her three children and is blessed with seemingly endless reserves of patience. Vaughan, however, slowly unspools the truth behind the shiny veneer in a stunning, bracingly honest thriller that crackles with tension thanks, in part, to the sterling work of the multiple narrators. It’d be remiss of us to even hint at the emotionally devasting event that shatters Jess’ veneer, but we will recommend you stay on your toes. The twists keep on coming here.
