Publisher Description

Lolita, light of my life, fire of my loins. My sin, my soul. Lo-lee-ta: the tip of the tongue taking a trip of three steps down the palate to tap, at three, on the teeth. Lo. Lee. Ta.'

LOLITA is the story of Humbert Humbert, poet and pervert, and his obsession with twelve-year-old Dolores Haze. Determined to possess his 'Lolita' both carnally and artistically, Humbert embarks on a disastrous courtship that can only end in tragedy.

Initially, Nabokov was unable to find an American publisher willing to take the book on. It was finally published in Paris in 1954 but its notoriety spread quickly. Graham Green, in an interview in THE TIMES later that year, called it 'one of the best books of 1954'. When G.P. Putnam's Sons published in the US in 1958, it was a bestseller; the first book since Gone with the Wind to sell 100,000 copies in the first three weeks of publication.

Let it SIMMER!

The finale, of this golden work of literature, was spoiled by the banshee screaming information to me that I need not know!
I was quite aware which book I was listening to for 12 hours! What’s more: It ends with the name it begins with, for goodness sake! Lolita!
An allowance of simmering would have worked wonders! It would have ended perfectly

Mixed Feelings

Firstly, the voice reading was great.
Secondly, Nabokov’s ability to capture HH’s character and HH’s twisted unreliable telling of the story, in HH’s pretentious tone is in of itself impressive.
Thirdly, the book itself, unfortunately, the subject matter and the story arch was what I did not and could not enjoy. At points, it was so revolting, it made me sick. And that takes away from any amusement about the author’s skill in descriptive writing. I was told it’s a “necessary read” which was the only reason I listen to it, but I would not call it that. I’d say, a great book to listen to if you are not sensitive and are interested in criminals and their sick twisted minds and the ability of an author to capture that.

2 reviews Not 13!!!

The write up is terrible!
For instance WHO is this guy because it’s SO NOT Jeremy Irons on the preview!!
Am NOT forking over £13 big ones for this dubious sounding geezer reading the foreword!
If you guys want to really be fair
Let people see the other reviews as I can only access the very same two no matter what buttons I press! And let people actually listen to Irons. Not this shifty sounding bloke.
Obviously right now am Not buying the book but may if I am ACTUALLY allowed to preview the ACTUAL shown narrator.
