We’re big Paige Toon fans at Apple Books and this beautifully heartbreaking book captures precisely why. There’s a warmth to her writing that means even her most devastating work—and there’s a considerable emotional toll here—is totally unputdownable. We meet Bury St Edmonds-based architect Wren as she embarks upon a sabbatical-of-the-heart to rural Indiana after splitting from her fiancé. Here she meets widower Anders and his brother Jonas. Both are struggling—Anders with a secret that could blow up his fledgling relationship with Wren and Jonas with his mental health—and Toon writes about Wren’s arrival into their lives beautifully. A gorgeous tear-jerker that stayed with us long after Anders’ big reveal.

Wren (Aka Little Bird) thought her life was all mapped out, a fiancé that is dependable and as an architect she loves her job.
One day while on her way to meet her Fiancé she witnesses a look exchanged with him and his co-worker and Wren knows instantly deep in the pit of her stomach her relationship is over.
In an effort to get over her heartbreak she decides to visit her Dad and step family who live in America.
Also in America close by is Anders, he is dealing with his own heartbreak and cannot move on, why?
When the two meet Wren is taken aback as she falls for him almost instantly, he displays a guarded amount of interest but keeps his distance why?
What we then go on to see is heartbreak on display on a whole other level, which completely swept me away….

I thought it would have something to do with the name sake song
Disappointing, stuck in old time patriarchal thinking
The female narrator lacks much emotion, it is flat and feels very inauthentic. I haven’t read or listened to any of the other books by this author but there is not much of a storyline and it is very sickeningly damsel/female in a patriarchal world. To the point where I couldn’t listen to a particular chapter about 3/4 way through without stopping it. It is poorly written particularly just after half way through. I did finish it if that’s a positive but I was very disappointed. If you do not want to hear about how the female lead cannot believe her luck about a man blah blah then I suggest you don’t listen/read this.
